Best Pregnancy Pillows

Let’s face it, once that little miracle is on the way, catching those Z’s becomes a bit of a challenge. Many moms-to-be, myself included, find that pregnancy brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “disturbed sleep.” As our bodies change and our bellies grow, finding a cozy sleeping position feels like a quest for the Holy Grail.

With all the physical and emotional changes happening during this time, getting enough shut-eye becomes crucial for both me and my little one. From back pain to pelvic discomfort, those aches and pains can really put a damper on a good night’s sleep.

But fear not! There’s a secret weapon in the battle for better sleep: the pregnancy pillow. Trust me, these pillows are like magic wands when it comes to easing those pregnancy-related sleep woes.

Benefits of pregnancy pillows

Pregnancy pillows offer a host of benefits, making them a must-have during this special time:

  • They provide crucial support for your belly while you sleep, ensuring you rest more comfortably.
  • By alleviating soreness from side-sleeping, they help maintain optimal sleeping positions during pregnancy.
  • Whether you’re traveling for trips, vacations, or babymoons, these pillows offer added comfort on the go.
  • Many pillows can also serve as breastfeeding aids, making nursing sessions more comfortable for both you and your baby.
  • They can be used to prop yourself up, helping to ease pregnancy heartburn and promoting better digestion.
  • And let’s not forget the simple joy of finding a cozy position while binge-watching shows on the couch!

When should you start using a pregnancy pillow?

It’s wise to invest in one early in your pregnancy journey. Some women experience back and hip pain even before they start showing.

Why wait until discomfort sets in? By getting a pregnancy pillow early on, you can sleep more comfortably and even prevent pain from occurring in the first place.

In fact, I’d recommend purchasing your pregnancy pillow during the first trimester so you can make the most out of its benefits throughout your pregnancy.

Types of pregnancy pillows

There are actually a few different types of maternity body pillows with different shapes! We’ll sort our reviews below based on these types. Let’s check them out:

  1. Full-Length Pregnancy Pillows: These pillows are as long as your body and provide support from your head to your toes. They change shape with your body, so you can find the perfect position for comfort and relaxation.
  2. Wedge Pregnancy Pillows: Wedge-shaped pillows are versatile and give support to specific areas like your back, belly, or legs. They’re small and easy to carry, so you can use them when you travel or as a support pillow after giving birth.
  3. C-Shaped Pregnancy Pillows: These big, curved pillows give support to your whole body. They mostly support your back and belly.
  4. U-Shaped Pregnancy Pillows: U-shaped pillows wrap around your body, giving you support all over and keeping your body in the right position. This one was my favorite when I was pregnant because it gave support to my back, neck, and belly all at once!

How to choose pregnancy pillow

When making your final decision, consider the following:

  1. Removable Cover: Check if the maternity pillow you’re eyeing comes with a removable cover. As your pregnancy progresses, you’ll likely find yourself sweating more than usual, and regular use might soil your pillow. Removable covers make cleaning hassle-free, allowing you to maintain hygiene easily.
  2. Filling Type: Different pillows use different types of filling, so it’s essential to choose one that suits your preferences and needs.
    • Styrofoam Ball Filling: These pillows are often cheaper and quickly adapt to your body shape. However, they can be noisy when you move.
    • Polyester Fiber Filling: Popular for its softness and noiseless quality, polyester fiber filling offers comfort without disturbance. Keep in mind that more filling results in a firmer pillow, but these pillows may lack breathability.
    • Microbead Filling: Lightweight and portable, microbead-filled pillows provide excellent support without noise. They’re ideal for travel.
    • Memory Foam Filling: Memory foam pillows contour to your body shape and provide firm support. They may retain heat, so some manufacturers shred the foam to improve airflow.
    • Organic Fillings: If you prefer natural materials, consider pillows filled with spelt, wool, or kapok for an organic and chemical-free option.
  3. Noise Level: Certain fillings may produce more noise than others when you move during sleep. If you’re a light sleeper, opt for pillows with quiet fillings and fabrics to ensure a peaceful night’s rest.
  4. Hypoallergenic Properties: Pregnancy hormones can increase sensitivity to allergens, so choosing a hypoallergenic pillow can prevent allergic reactions and promote better sleep.
  5. Size: Select a pillow size that suits your height and preferences. While some prefer larger pillows for full-body support, others may prefer smaller pillows targeting specific areas.
  6. Softness vs. Firmness: Consider your comfort preferences and any joint pain you may experience. While soft pillows offer comfort, firmer pillows provide better spinal support.
  7. Stage of Pregnancy: Your needs may change throughout your pregnancy, so consider the stage you’re in when selecting a pillow. As your belly grows, you may require additional support to maintain a comfortable sleeping position.
  8. Body Heat Regulation: Pregnancy hormones can increase body temperature and cause excessive sweating. Look for pillows made from breathable fabrics like flannel to prevent overheating and discomfort.
  9. Sleeping Preferences: Pregnancy often alters sleeping positions, so choose a pillow that provides adequate support for side sleeping. Belly support may also be necessary for side sleepers to relieve pressure on the abdomen.

Queen Rose Full Body Pregnancy Pillow

Queen Rose Full Body Pregnancy Pillow

The Queen Rose is a long U-shaped pregnancy pillow that stretches from behind your head to your feet on both sides, providing complete support.

This pillow is no lightweight. In fact, it’s large and dense, which might make it feel heavy at first. But trust me, the weight is worth it when you experience the incredible support it provides. During my third trimester, I had my partner help me place it on the bed each night because of its weight. But here’s the kicker – it felt just as supportive in the morning as it did the night before, in all the right places.

What sets the Queen Rose apart is its ability to offer support in multiple areas – from head and neck to chest, bump, hips, knees, and even down to the feet. Plus, it has a slightly elevated neck area, perfect for reducing pregnancy reflux without needing to stack additional pillows. The U shape of the pillow ensures support on both sides of the body, accommodating even the most restless sleepers like myself.

What’s really cool is that it’s made of this super soft material that feels like snuggling into your favorite cozy blanket. And even though it’s plush, it doesn’t make me too hot – which is a big plus!

I also love how versatile it is. I can use it during the day to support me while I work, and then at night, it keeps me comfy on my side. And I know once my baby arrives, it’ll still come in handy for both of us!

All in all, the Queen Rose Pillow is super comfy, supportive, and just what every expecting mom needs for a good night’s sleep.

Leacho Snoogle Total Body Pillow

Leacho Snoogle Total Body Pillow

The Snoogle stands out as a top contender among pregnancy pillows, and for excellent reasons! Its generous 60-inch length might seem imposing, but once you experience its comprehensive support, you’ll understand why it’s worth the space it occupies in your bed. Crafted with two curved ends, it acts as both a knee and head pillow simultaneously, while the middle section cradles your back, creating a cozy nest that keeps you snug all night long.

What’s truly remarkable is how the Snoogle transcends the role of a typical head pillow. Not only does it replace your standard pillow, but it also goes the extra mile by providing unparalleled support to your back, hips, legs, and belly. It’s like receiving a warm embrace from every angle!

What sets the Snoogle apart is its origins – conceived by a registered nurse and mother who truly understands the needs of expectant mothers. This pillow is meticulously designed to conform to your body’s natural contours, ensuring optimal comfort and support throughout the night.

With an elongated midsection and a horseshoe-shaped headrest, the Snoogle offers the perfect dimensions for indulgent snuggling. Additionally, its bottom curves up to support your knees, promoting better airflow and preventing overheating under the covers.

Meiz Pregnancy Pillow

Meiz Pregnancy Pillow

Overall, my experience with the Meiz pregnancy pillow was mostly positive, and it has some good features. I like that it comes in different colors, and the velvety cover is included in the price. The cover can be washed, but I wouldn’t wash it too often because the velvet might lose its softness and it’s tricky to put the pillow back in. It might also get sweaty in the summer.

The filling wasn’t as smooth as I expected, and it needed a lot of fluffing to even out. It also took a few days to expand to its full size. Over time, the pillow lost some of its height, and the filling moved around a lot, especially at the top of the “U” where my head should rest. I wish the filling stayed in place better to support my head and neck.

But the Meiz pillow has many uses. I used it on the couch and even on the floor. It’s great for propping up my legs and keeping my back comfortable.

It comes in three lengths, which is good for people of different heights. I got the 55″ pillow, which was the right size for me. However, it’s a wide pillow, which made me feel a bit claustrophobic, especially when sharing the bed with my husband. He’s not a big fan of it taking up so much space!

Pharmedoc Pregnancy Pillows

Pharmedoc Pregnancy Pillows

The PharMeDoc Pregnancy Pillow is getting quite popular lately. It’s a good option if you’re on a budget. It’s not too firm or too soft, and you can adjust it in different ways to find the perfect sleeping position. But, the filling inside can clump up, so you’ll need to fluff it often to keep it comfy.

I usually prefer U-shaped pillows, like the Body Nest, but I can see why some people like the PharMeDoc’s C shape. It’s not too big, so you don’t feel overwhelmed, but it could be longer for better leg support. Plus, the seams aren’t very strong, and the zipper can be delicate, so you’ll need to handle it carefully.

The PharMeDoc comes with a cotton jersey cover in different colors. It’s easy to wash, but after a few washes, the fabric can start to pill and feel rougher on your skin. If you plan to use it for a long time, you might want to get an extra cover in a softer material.
