You Only Need These Few Tools To Start Sewing

Sewing is a fantastic hobby to have, whether you like making clothes, home accessories or plush toys. If you’ve never sewn before, or you haven’t since school, you might be unsure about how to get started. Before you can take on your first sewing projects, you need a few supplies to get you started. While it might seem like you need a lot, there aren’t too many items you need for your first simple projects. You don’t need too big of a budget to get your supplies, with a sewing machine likely to be the most expensive item on your list.

A SEWING MACHINE

If you’re not sure whether you want to get into sewing, you might hold off on buying a sewing machine just yet.  You can sew a few simple projects by hand, but you’ll soon find that you want to do things a little faster.  Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on a sewing machine.  You can get an affordable one that’s ideal for beginner’s projects.  It’s important to compare the different functions available and see what you can get for your budget.  A lot of beginners start with a small machine with just a handful of stitches.

CUTTING AND MEASURING TOOLS

Being able to measure and cut your fabric and other materials accurately is important.  There are several tools you’ll find useful when you’re sewing.  Firstly, a soft measuring tape gives you the ability to measure things flexibly.  It’s ideal if you want to make clothes and it’s useful to measuring out long pieces of fabric too.  A ruler is also useful for when you want to measure smaller lengths, and you need something more solid.  A cutting mat is useful for both measuring and giving you a solid surface to cut on.  You might prefer a sharp pair of sewing scissors or a rotary cutter.

MARKING TOOLS AND PINS

Whether you’re following a pattern or just doing whatever you like, being able to make marks on your fabric and pin things into place is essential.  Of course, you don’t want the marks you make to be permanent.  Tailor’s chalk works well, and it’s a good idea to have it in a few different colors.  Transfer paper and a tracing wheel help you to transfer marks from your pattern onto your fabric.  Some good pins are also incredibly useful.  It’s worth spending a little bit of money on them, so they stay strong and sharp.

ORGANIZATIONAL TOOLS

One you have these basic items, you probably want to keep them organized.  Get yourself a sewing box for all your essentials, so they’re always right there when you need them.  It can also be useful to have somewhere to store your fabric and other materials.  If you buy sewing patterns, figuring out a system to store them is also necessary after a while.

You don’t need much to get started with sewing.  As you try out a few projects, you’ll slowly build up the things you need.
